Create, release, repeat, The Happy Rat cartoon

There’s so much ego in being good at stuff, right? I know it. I want to be the most awesome cartoonist ever and it’s always so frustrating when I don’t nail a concept quite the way I want to.

What I’ve learnt over this cartoon blogging journey is that I simply have to keep going. Every day I create a cartoon, put it out into the world, and then let go of how people think of it.

Some cartoons I think are awesome no one notices, and the ones I think are so-so others love. This is the path of a creator — just create, release, repeat.

Chasing an idea bubble, The Happy Rat cartoon

I recently finished reading Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert. One of my favour parts of the book was where she described how ideas float from person to person. This concept always helps motivate me to create the idea when I have it, in case it decides to head float off somewhere else! 🙂

Today’s cartoon is inspired by fellow blogger Esther‘s question: what is the most difficult criticism you have received? As a creator, my biggest challenge is the gap between my perceptions of what I create and the feedback I get.

Sometimes I’ve made something that I’m sure will touch and inspire my readers, and it’s a dud from the feedback perspective. Then other times, I’m rushed and just put out a simple piece, and people love it!

So I need to continually challenge myself to create pieces regardless of how they are received and find happiness in the act of creating – knowing that it all evens out in the end.

Hugs and happiness to all the Happy Rats out there busy creating.
