Sheep when I grow up, The Happy Rat, Sarah Hunt

There is something so beautiful about watching children dream. Their innocence always makes me happy and a little sad too โ€” sad perhaps at how it can get lost in the adult world.

Create, release, repeat, The Happy Rat cartoon

There’s so much ego in being good at stuff, right? I know it. I want to be the most awesome cartoonist ever and it’s always so frustrating when I don’t nail a concept quite the way I want to.

What I’ve learnt over this cartoon blogging journey is that I simply have to keep going. Every day I create a cartoon, put it out into the world, and then let go of how people think of it.

Some cartoons I think are awesome no one notices, and the ones I think are so-so others love. This is the path of a creator โ€” just create, release, repeat.

Nurture that dream, The Happy Rat cartoon

Like a little egg, nurture and protect your dreams. Don’t let just anyone know about them, don’t be rough with them, and don’t give them away to the wrong people to critique. While they’re growing, treat your dreams with the care and kindness of a little bird learning to fly.

Chasing an idea bubble, The Happy Rat cartoon

I recently finished reading Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert. One of my favour parts of the book was where she described how ideas float from person to person. This concept always helps motivate me to create the idea when I have it, in case it decides to head float off somewhere else! ๐Ÿ™‚

This is your time, The Happy Rat cartoon

If there’s one thing I’ve learnt, it’s that there is no magical future time where you’ll have everything lined up. No one will come to you and say ‘oh follow that path’, or give you the secret handshake, or give you the affirmation you’re waiting for. Now is your time, and your time is nowโ€”that’s all there is to it.
